MAINE GOP CHAIR STATEMENT ON APPALLING REPORT ABOUT BEN CHIN CAMPAIGN

AUGUSTA—Today, Demi Kouzounas, Chair of the Maine Republican Party, released the following statement upon learning of a report that Maine People’s Alliance political director and Lewiston Mayoral candidate, Ben Chin, has a known, convicted pedophile on his 2017 campaign volunteer list:

“This deeply disturbing report should make all Mainers think carefully about what sort of people they want representing them in elected office. This convicted pedophile had already been exposed earlier this year to be working for the Maine People’s Alliance, where Chin worked and still works. There is no possible way Chin could not have known about this child molester, yet as of yesterday he still had him listed as a volunteer for his 2017 campaign to be Mayor of Lewiston.

The Maine People’s Alliance says it cares about equality, justice, and fairness, yet this report suggests it says one thing while doing the opposite. There is nothing fair or just in allowing convicted pedophiles near our children. Do we want groups like this, and the people working for them, representing us in Maine and putting our sons and daughters in danger? I think not. I ask the people of Lewiston to consider this revelation very carefully before deciding on December 12th who they want to be their next Mayor.”

[NOTE: In 1999, Douglas Lane, who volunteered for the Maine People’s Alliance this year and who is listed on Ben Chin’s 2017 campaign volunteer list, was convicted on two counts of gross sexual assault involving children under the age of 14, according to the Maine Police Department sex offender registry.]
