Representative Kathy Downes is serving in her first term as a member of Maine’s House of Representatives.
After graduating from Bucksport High School, where she played basketball and softball, Kathy Downes went into the banking industry, initially with Brewer Savings Bank in 1979 and then with Maine Savings Bank. She lived in Gardiner about four years; while working for MSB, she attended Thomas College.
Then Downes transferred to Bucksport after gaining management status with Maine Savings Bank. She became the Bucksport town clerk in 1992 upon the retirement of former Town Clerk Joyce Johnson. Downes took courses over three years at the New England Municipal Clerks’ Institute & Academy in Newport, Rhode Island and became a certified clerk of Maine.
Governor Angus S. King appointed Downes as dedimus justice in November 2001. In this capacity she swears in public officials, such as notaries public. Downes has had other appointments to state boards; she served on the Maine Town and City Clerks’ Association Board of Directors and was the vice president of the Hancock County Clerks’ Association for many years.
